CHAPTER

32

SYLMAR

ROCKET, BASEBALL CAP askew, watched Ozzie end the call from the sofa across the room. Ozzie sighed and hunched forward, elbows on knees. Jordy had been pacing back and forth through the doorway between the living room and kitchen but stopped when Ozzie ended the call.

“What?” Rocket said.

“We got … conflicting information,” said Ozzie. “Said he has to sell his house. That he just sold his car. That all in, he can get maybe … a hundred thirty K.”

“The fuck!” exclaimed Jordy.

Rocket winced. “Do you think he’s trying to chisel us? Maybe that cop is coaching him.”

“Ex-cop,” said Ozzie. He shook his head. “He sounded like he meant it.”

“The guy’s an actor,” Jordy said. “It’s his job to sound like he means it. Fuck!”

“Jordy,” said Rocket, “take it down a notch.” Then to Ozzie, “So you think he’s being straight.”

“Says he got sick and the hospital took it all, and that the puta didn’t know. Knew he was sick,” Ozzie corrected himself. “Didn’t know it cleaned him out. Or close to it.”

“So, he had it, but now he doesn’t.” Rocket looked down. “Well, shit.”

“That’s just great.” said Jordy, pacing again. “Let’s shake down a rich movie star. The kicker is, he’s not rich!” He turned to Rocket. “I told you, go for a million. But nooooo. ‘I got it all figured,’ you said. ‘Keep him off his pins,’ you said. Like you’re going fucking bowling!” Then, his voice laced with sarcasm: “Don’t this sound familiar.”

Rocket had to take a beat, then he returned Jordy’s look. “Or maybe … he’s just trying to keep some of it,” he said, letting some sarcasm of his own through. “To start over with. I would if I thought I could get away with it.”

Ozzie chimed in. “Then tonight we’ll know what he’s really got. But what about the puta—you think she knew he was busted?”

Rocket shook his head. “No. She really thinks he has it. And”—he said for Jordy’s benefit—“maybe he does.” Back to Ozzie. “We’ll have to wait and see, like you said.” He paused. “Might be the weekend before we’re done. You guys better go stock up, get supplies in case we have to wait it out here a couple days.”

“Janette’ll wonder where I am,” said Jordy. “Might ask around.”

“You two lovebirds got plans?” said Ozzie. “Sunday picnic at the beach?”

Jordy looked at Ozzie. “It’s called an alibi, fuckhead.”

“Would anybody miss her before Monday?” asked Rocket. Clearly there was an idea behind his question.

Jordy knew what he was implying, but unlike Edvina, Janette didn’t deserve that. Jordy had to think on his feet. “Maybe. Could be planning to see her dad. She does that on the weekend sometimes. I could get some stuff from her place, leave a note that I went surfing for the weekend. That should do it.”

They heard a scratchy voice, muffled as it traveled through the walls from the back of the house, calling for something. Jordy and Ozzie looked at Rocket.

“Yeah, yeah, my turn,” he said, and got up as Ozzie and Jordy filed out the front door to trek to the supermarket a few blocks away.
